The packaging for Niigata Prefecture’s Echigo Beer is certainly unlike any other. For fans of Studio Ghibli’s famous film My Neighbor Totoro, directed by Hayao Miyazaki, it dons a unique design that doubles as a collectible.

Miyazaki has redesigned its lovable ‘Totoro’ character especially for the Japanese craft beer label, where special Kanji characters have replaced the crescent-shaped designs on its tummy.

The characters are Miyazaki’s rendition of Toshio Suzuki’s original calligraphy signature, shown below. Suzuki is Studio Ghibli’s co-founder and producer behind My Neighbor Totoro as well as many other major films by the animation house, including Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away.

This special Echigo Beer is now selling online at JP¥4,320 (US$38) for a pack of six 330ml bottles.
