Artwork Created Using AI Is First Of Its Kind To Go On Sale At Auction House

Auction house Christie’s is putting up a special artwork for sale.

The print entitled Portrait of Edmond Belamy, 2018 was made using AI by French art collective Obvious. The artwork will be the first print if its kind to go on sale at the auction house.

The image was made using General Adversarial Network (GAN) technology. The AI was fed with a data set consisting 15,000 portraits dated between 14th and 20th centuries to create the graphic.

The result shows a blurry depiction of what is said to be a person from the fictional Belamy family. The work will go on sale at the Prints & Multiples sale at Christie’s in New York, from 23 to 25 October, and is estimated to sell for between US$7,000 and US$10,000.

Recently, a nude portrait created using AI won the global art prize at the 7th Annual Lumen Prize Awards Ceremony.

Stay tuned! Tonight in New York we’re hosting an event with @BBGMedia featuring a panel on the intersection of AI and fine art pic.twitter.com/0RB5zgnxZK
