Sexy New Hotel Alert: The Old Clare in Sydney – BlackBook

We’re loving Australia these days – especially its gorgeous marquee city, Sydney. And a recent visit took us to the equally stunning and sexy new Old Clare Hotel, just opened in the burgeoning hip hood of Chippendale.Bordering Central Park, Chinatown and Central Station, the newest Aussie member of Design Hotels is a joining of the former County Clare Pub and United Brewery Offices. Singaporean investor Loh Lik Peng has invested a staggering $2 billion AUD, resulting in a swish luxury hotel that nevertheless carefully preserves the buildings’ gritty industrial aesthetic. The 62 loft sized rooms are outfitted with custom mid-century inspired furnishings, while tall windows, patterned floors and free standing tubs imbue them with a kind of factory-chic. The Mary O’ Suite has alluringly distressed walls.Loh was also determined to make his Kensington street location Sydney’s next hot culinary destination, with a trio of intriguing restaurants: Clayton Well’s 1930’s-warehouse-styled Automata; the Northern Europe influenced Silvereye, headed by Sam Miller, former sous chef of Noma; and the soon-to-open (December) and highly anticipated flagship restaurant Kensington Street Social, from Michelin starred Brit chef Jason Atherton. And yes, of course, there’s a rooftop pool bar.
