A New Zealand newspaper has found itself in the spotlight after a front page typo incorrectly reported the passing of Marvel Comics’ president Stan Lee.

The Gisborne Herald mistakenly publicized director Spike Lee’s passing as a result. Next to an image of Stan lay the words, “‘Characters first, superheroes next’: Spike Lee dies at 95.”

The error was quickly highlighted by numerous internet users as well as Spike. The 61-year-old director, who remains alive and well, took to Instagram to announce the mistake. He clarified, “God Bless Stan Lee. Me? Not Yet. And Dat’s Da ‘I’m Still A Live, And Strivin’ Truth, Ruth. YA-DIG? SHO-NUFF’.”

While the newspaper did acknowledge the error, no apology was issued. Instead, The Gisborne Herald followed up on its blunder with the header, “International spotlight on Gisborne Herald after headline gaffe.” The article opens, “The Gisborne Herald achieved international infamy overnight with a front page error,” before adding a paragraph further below that reads, “One of the many who commented on Spike’s post mentioned that Stan Lee would be laughing about this.”
