On Thursday, First Lady Melania Trump made a surprise visit to the US-Mexico border to meet immigrant children who were detained as a result of the US administration’s family separation policy. While the nature of the stopover would be enough to get people talking, it was mainly her outfit that did the work.
As she boarded her plane to Texas, Melania Trump was seen wearing a US$39 Zara military jacket with the slogan, “I don’t care, do u?” printed on its back. Internet users have found the outerwear completely unsuitable for the occasion, which has sparked a debate about human rights.
“I don’t care what she [was] trying to say,” tweeted ‘AtxGirlInScrubbs’, who was ridiculing the tagline. “It’s inappropriate if she’s going to see immigrant CHILDREN.”
It’s also chilling to know that the kid-sized version of the jacket reads, “Let’s go and don’t look back.”

Melania Trump’s Communications Director, Stephanie Grisham, has censured media publications and their followers for reading too much into the getup and missing the bigger picture. “It’s a jacket. There was no hidden message. After today’s important visit to Texas, I hope the media isn’t going to choose to focus on her wardrobe.”
President Trump has also responded to the negative attention surrounding the jacket, although his statement contradicts Grisham’s. “‘I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO U?’, written on the back of Melania’s jacket, refers to the Fake News Media. Melania has learned how dishonest they are, and she truly no longer cares!”
Sometimes, the internet makes its point by creating jokes out of dissatisfactory situations. Twitter users have noticed, for instance, that the parka’s typeface resembles the one in the Melania Trump-designed ‘Be Best’ logo. Many have also slipped their own slogans into Zara’s product photo.

Parker Molloy, a senior writer at Upworthy, has since launched ‘IReallyDoCare.com’, a website that lets people who care donate to 14 support groups for immigrants.
