Melania Trump’s Tone-Deaf ‘I Really Don’t Care, Do U?’ Zara Jacket Sparks Memes

On Thursday, First Lady Melania Trump made a surprise visit to the US-Mexico border to meet immigrant children who were detained as a result of the US administration’s family separation policy. While the nature of the stopover would be enough to get people talking, it was mainly her outfit that did the work.

As she boarded her plane to Texas, Melania Trump was seen wearing a US$39 Zara military jacket with the slogan, “I don’t care, do u?” printed on its back. Internet users have found the outerwear completely unsuitable for the occasion, which has sparked a debate about human rights.

“I don’t care what she [was] trying to say,” tweeted ‘AtxGirlInScrubbs’, who was ridiculing the tagline. “It’s inappropriate if she’s going to see immigrant CHILDREN.”

It’s also chilling to know that the kid-sized version of the jacket reads, “Let’s go and don’t look back.”

The irony of Melania Trump’s distasteful Zara parka slogan is that this is what the kids version of the jacket says…

Melania Trump’s Communications Director, Stephanie Grisham, has censured media publications and their followers for reading too much into the getup and missing the bigger picture. “It’s a jacket. There was no hidden message. After today’s important visit to Texas, I hope the media isn’t going to choose to focus on her wardrobe.”

President Trump has also responded to the negative attention surrounding the jacket, although his statement contradicts Grisham’s. “‘I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO U?’, written on the back of Melania’s jacket, refers to the Fake News Media. Melania has learned how dishonest they are, and she truly no longer cares!”

Sometimes, the internet makes its point by creating jokes out of dissatisfactory situations. Twitter users have noticed, for instance, that the parka’s typeface resembles the one in the Melania Trump-designed ‘Be Best’ logo. Many have also slipped their own slogans into Zara’s product photo.

If you care for some laughs, check out highlights of the jokes and photo edits below. Memes aside, there is one more good thing that has come out of the controversy. Parker Molloy, a senior writer at Upworthy, has since launched ‘’, a website that lets people who care donate to 14 support groups for immigrants.

Aide: Let’s go to Texas to show America you care about the detained kids.
Melania: Sounds good.
Aide: This trip can salvage everything.
Melania: Right.
Aide: You’re our last hope.
Melania: I understand.

Indifference. Lack of interest or care.

E.g. The words on Melania Trump’s jacket indicate indifference.

Instead of wearing the "I don’t really care, do you?" jacket, Melania should have worn this one👇#ThursdayThoughts #YesWeCare

Fixed Melania’s jacket. I knew those 15 seasons of "Project Runway" would come in handy one day!

This is just like the time Eleanor Roosevelt wore that "GREAT DEPRESSION? I FEEL FINE" onesie to visit a soup kitchen.
