McDonald’s UK customers are not lovin’ it after the fast food chain replaced its plastic straws with new paper ones.
Thousands of patrons have signed a petition to get rid of the paper straws, which the fast food chain recently adopted in a bid to save the environment. Customers claim that the new straws have led to a difficulty in enjoying drinks, especially milkshakes.
According to a Twitter user, the paper straws are just “a sheet of paper rolled up,” so its corners adhere together after just two sips of a milkshake. Another says the paper straws “saturate too easily and feel horrible” for sipping.
McDonald’s UK, however, isn’t changing its mind on the paper straws despite the petition. A spokesperson for the chain defends that its suppliers have created special paper straws that are made to last in most liquids for at least 30 minutes.
Some social media users side with McDonald’s, with many firing back at those who are asking for the return of plastic straws.
According to McDonald’s UK CEO Paul Pomroy, the chain chose the sustainable route as many customers wanted the company to implement greener initiatives.
