City Hero Breaks Law By Adding Googly Eyes On Statue, Internet Reacts Epically

Apparently, sticking googly eyes on pop culture characters is okay, but the act should only be pulled online and not in public spaces.

All eyes were on the Facebook page of Savannah’s city government, which shared a series of photos depicting the masterpiece of a hero with just one known skill: the ability to discern where best to apply googly eyes.

The prankster had applied a pair of eyes onto a 50-foot marble obelisk of Nathanael Greene in Johnson Square, and the page is calling on to anyone who can identify them.

For the uninitiated, Greene was born in 1742 and was reputed to be George Washington’s most gifted officer in the American Revolutionary War.

As it seems, a stunt of this audacity is a criminal offense that could result in an arrest of the culprit.

“Who did this?! Someone placed googly eyes on our historic Nathanael Greene statue in Johnson Square. It may look funny but harming our historic monuments and public property is no laughing matter, in fact, it’s a crime.”

“We are hoping to find the person responsible! If you have information, please call Savannah Police Department.”

If you’ve been on the internet long enough, you would be able to guess which side citizens are on.

“We ain’t snitches,” says Facebook user Valerie Cervoni. Several echo her sentiments. Most are, of course, tantal-eyes-ed by the brilliant move and wish to see more of the craft asset make its appearance across the city.

“Who is [Nathanael] Greene? Never mind. I’ll Googly him,” joked user Aaron McMillan.

Sadly, all googly things have to come to an end. Keturah Greene, a spokeswoman at the Savannah Police Department, says that the eyes were removed from the statue of the war hero after officers were alerted of the stunt.

“[The eyes] did not appear to do any damage,” she says, though the act “is technically trespassing.”

She adds that a report for trespassing had been written, and that the police department is reviewing surveillance cameras to look out for signs of the culprit.

If only officials could have closed their eyes to the humorous display.
